MSc Real Estate
Aim of Programme
The programme aims to equip students with contemporary and relevant knowledge and techniques to enable them understand the workings of real estate markets.
Objectives
Specifically, the programme seeks to achieve the following objectives;
- Enable students to understand the unique nature of real estate markets and its role in the urban economy.
- Expose students to the techniques and tools of real estate investment analysis, valuation, financing and development.
- Equip students to conceive, plan, evaluate and execute development projects.
- Assist students to employ modern technology and tools in addressing real estate problems and challenges.
- Prepare students to integrate knowledge from economics, finance, management and law in dealing business issues in real estate and to empower them to become entrepreneurs.
General Learning Outcomes
At the end of the programme, students are expected to be able to:
- Practically demonstrate the ability to apply analytical tools in making strategic decisions relating to the acquisition, development, financing, marketing and management of real estate.
- Develop problem-solving skills and the ability to apply them to solve real estate related problems, as they affect nations, organizations, individuals and the environment.
- Apply acquired knowledge in the analysis of real estate performance as an asset class and manage the challenges in treating real estate as an investment asset.
Entry Requirements
The MSc. Real Estate degree programme is a professionally oriented international qualification open to students who have interest in the field of real estate. The requirements for enrolment are as follows:
- Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree (with a minimum of 2nd Class Lower Division) in Real Estate, Land Economy, Architecture, Business Administration, Civil Engineering, Building Technology Construction Management, Estate Management, Quantity Surveying and Construction Economics and Planning.
- Applicants with Bachelor’s degree (with a minimum of 2nd Class Lower Division) in other fields such as Information Technology, Law, Planning, Project Management, Mathematics/Statistics, Actuarial Science, Economics or other related degrees from recognised institutions must have at least (two) years work experience in the real estate industry.
- All candidates must attend an interview session.
Employment Opportunities
There are several existing and emerging opportunities in burgeoning real estate industry in Ghana and within the African Region. In particular, opportunities exist in the real estate development sector where graduates can choose a path of entrepreneurship or work as project analyst with existing real estate developers. In addition, graduates of the programme can pursue careers in property management, valuation, real estate brokerage, asset/portfolio management, mortgage banking among others. In each of these areas, opportunities exist to either pursue a career with firms providing these services or for graduates to start their businesses. Given the urgent national need to accelerate job creation, special emphasis will be given to equipping graduates to become employers. These efforts will include not just a course on entrepreneurship, but more importantly special business clinics will be instituted to offer practical assistance to students on how to start businesses upon completion. Besides, graduates of this programme may also pursue a career in tertiary educational institutions as researchers or lecturers.

c. Assessment of Students’ Performance and AchievementAll taught courses shall be assessed by written examinations.
- Research coursesshall be assessed by both oral and written reports and end of semester examinations.
- Project Research works shall be assessed by written reports and oral examinations.
- Courses assessed solely by written examinations at the end of the semester have two components: the end of semester examination (60%) and continuous assessment including mid-semester examination (40%).
- Pass mark for each of the courses shall be 50%.
- Regular attendance at seminars, submission and presentation of seminar reports
Requirements for Graduation
To qualify for the award of MSc degree in Real Estate, like most graduate programmes, students will be required to pass all courses and complete a total of at least 32 credit hours. Students will also be required to take 12 compulsory courses. The 12 compulsory courses are structured such that, six of the taught courses are taken in the first semester and the remaining six in the second semester of the academic year of study. The last three (3) months of the programme (from June – August) shall be devoted to students’ research dissertation and seminar presentation on progress of work.
Students shall be required to obtain a minimum Cumulated Weighted Average (CWA) of 55%, in order to graduate.
